Empowering Healthcare: MASH Moments of Safety for Expert Workplace Insights
What is the importance of new worker orientation?
Starting a new job can be unsafe for all workers- whether they are experienced workers new to the organization, returning after extended leave, who move from one area of the workplace to another, or workers who are brand new to the field. They may have less knowledge in recognizing hazardous situations and may lack familiarity with policies and procedures that are in place for their protection. Providing orientation for workers will make them feel welcomed and valued, but also allows them to become familiar with the hazards of their new environment, and how to protect themselves and others to ensure their safety.
What to include in new worker orientation
Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Regulation Part 2.2.1 defines a new worker and outlines the minimum topics that are to be included in the orientation of a new worker. Other pertinent information can be added by the employer to new worker orientation. The orientation of new workers must be documented- including the date of training, names of workers who attended and the trainer’s information. The following topics are required by legislation:
Rights and responsibilities of workers and the employer

Name and contact information of worker’s supervisor
Procedure for reporting unsafe conditions in the workplace
Committee member/worker representative contact information
Review policies, programs, and safe work procedures
How workers may be exposed to hazards in the workplace and the control measure in place to protect workers
Emergency procedures
First aid
Identify prohibited/restricted areas or activities
Any other matters necessary to ensure the health and safety of workers while at work
Implementing a new worker orientation program will foster a positive safety culture within the organization and motivate all employees to prioritize safety and maintain consistency in safety practices.
