Worker Rights & Responsibilities

The Manitoba Workplace Safety & Health Act & Regulation sets out the rights and duties of all parties in the workplace. Under the legislation, employers must inform workers of their rights and responsibilities for working safely. For further information see: WSH Act Section 2(2)e.

DO YOU KNOW YOUR RIGHTS?

Every worker has the right to:

1. The Right to Know:

  • about the hazards at work

  • trained to recognize the hazards

  • informed about your rights

  • trained in safe work procedures 

  • provided with information to protect your safety and health

2. The Right to Participate:

  • participate in safety and health activities

    • reporting hazards

    • getting involved with your workplace safety and health committee

    • electing worker members to the safety and health committee

3. Right to Refuse Unsafe Work:

  • Refuse work that on reasonable grounds constitutes a danger to themselves or others.

4. Right to Protection from Reprisal:

  • carry out duties or exercise safety and health rights without being subject to reprisal. 

  • workers need to feel safe when raising safety and health concerns.

DO YOU KNOW YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES?

  • Take reasonable care to protect yourself and others while performing work duties.

  • Properly use safety equipment, clothing and devices.

  • Co-operate with the workplace safety and health committee or representatives.

  • Co-operate with coworkers, managers or supervisors regarding safety and health matters.
